Synopsis:
A journey into the darkness at the heart of man. Now with less French people.
Intentions:
Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece (duh), and one of my all-time favourite movies. I've seen both the theatrical cut and the Redux cut a few times now, and my opinion on the Redux cut is positive. There's some great, subtle new material included that really fits perfectly with the rest of the film, but I'm not a huge fan of the infamous French plantation sequence. It adds some nice historical context to Vietnam and social commentary on how losing Vietnam could drive America crazy as a country, but it makes the pacing grind to a halt and feels tonally out of place. And that's before the second half of the sequence decides to suddenly become a romance scene with terribly cheesy music before swiftly moving on, the events of the sequence never being mentioned again. So I solved that problem. That sequence is now removed, whilst all the other additions are kept in place. Some would argue that the new Playboy Bunnies scene feels out of place too, and I agree it sticks out from the rest of the movie. But at least it's a rather brief scene, and the atmosphere and themes are in check with the rest of the film, so I decided to keep it.
Change List:
- Cut the French plantation sequence - Added fanedit title card at the conclusion of the film.
Additional Notes:
- Edited using Sony Vegas Pro 13.
