Synopsis:
A more serious, more streamlined version of a movie we all want to love. It comes with a version with the nuke, and a version without the nuke so everyone can be happy!.
Intentions:
Ah, Indiana Jones and the crystal skull. My first ever fanedit. Time really does fly, after making this the actual Indiana Jones 5 movie release, and quite a few people were a bit dissapointed that I had cut out Mutt. And honestly.. I myself started to like Mutt over the years. So I thought, let's make a version with Mutt, showcasing all the little improvements I can make with my skills as a more senior faneditor now.
Change List:
- No yellow tint. Perfect HDR.
- Every cut is as seamless as can be
First off, there is a version without the nuke, and a version with the nuke but without the fridge flying miles.
- When the russians shoot the soldiers I added some gun shot flashes to guns. It feels weird to have them look like they're shooting without the VFX.
- Indiana Jones starts with less comedy. No Wubbayoos and no mind reading. Also no I like Ike. Irina doesn't introduce herself with her name, which makes her more mysterious and gives more weight to Indy asking who she was to the FBI.
-Made Mac a more serious villain. Removed (almost) all instances of him saying Jones-y. He now says Jones.
- The statue doesn't lose it's head as the russians crash into it.
- Removed the blowdart scene in the cemetary, as fun as it was I found it didn't make sense and diminished the scene at the temple with the natives.
- Removed the aliens untill the very end. When Spalko and Indy talk in the tent there is still true disbelief on Indy's side.
- Slightly reworked the quicksand sequence. Indy now doesn't ask Marion why he didn't finish school, instead he just stares in disbelief. It really helps that he isn't a hypocrite for cheap laughs.
- Indy doesn't tell Oxley to 'Go get help'. Instead when Mutt leaves he looks at Ox in disbelief and shouts 'HELP! GO!'. This also solves the problem of Indy acting surprised when he comes back with the russians. Why? He litterally did what Indy asked him to do. In this cut he now asks Ox to help Mutt, but instead confused Ox goes to get help from the Russians.
- Reworked the banter in the truck as Mutt realises who Indy is. Again, Indy doesn't tell him to go to school, instead coming across as actually upset that he didnt know he has a son.
- The jungle chase is now a ton of fun. The monkeys are removed seamlessly, and I keyed in Mutt in two shots to really sell the idea that he's still on the hood of the car.
- Re-edited the tree jump with the carboat to be more visually appealing.
- The ending is far improved over the original, and flows nicely. No Alien resurrection, which ruins the skeletons eerie uneasing feeling.
- All of the comedy is re-edited with the intention to be just the right healthy amount of lightheartedness. Indiana Jones imo always has been lighthearted. Crystal Skull's issue was that it went overboard.
Additional Notes:
For this version of Race with the Devil I focussed on fixing the three flaws the original fanedit has:
- Spalko's introduction felt slightly off.
- Mutt needs to be re-instated as Indiana Jones' son, without harming Indy as a character.
- The three waterfalls (unfortunately) had to be re-instated. To be fair, after you remove the monkeys ánd the nuclear bomb the waterfall section really doesn't bother me at all.
- The monkey section was improved, but felt incoherent and choppy and there was no true continuity.
- The ending needed to be fixed.
Other Sources:
MVsep was used to isolate all the sounds and voices to make sure transitions were smooth.
Special Thanks:
All the fans of the original Race with the Devil edit. It was truly a blast to see all this positive reaction!
