Synopsis:
The same story, the same characters, but with a twist. The edit is mixed up, trimmed, divided into chapters and accompanied with rocking music. It's intention is to make you cry out "yeah!" along the ride.
Intentions:
Inspired by the amazing fanedits "Heavy Star Wars" made by mredthefed and the styles of Quentin Tarantino and James Gunn. I love when a movie adds in a good rock song which makes you jump up, smile and cry "yeah!". That's such a fantastic feeling. With this edit I mixed the movie up, kept the same story, but made it a different experience.
Change List:
Editing Details:
The first draft was a "just go" edit. It was created from the beginning to the end just doing what felt right. Adding in a new intro, new slowmotions, new title cards, music, SFX and a lot more.
After that I went over the entire edit and tidied up everything. Changed various cuts and making it a overall better experience.
I then let a few people preview the edit and it went through 5-6 major versions until I ended with the final version.
Cuts and Additions:
Cutlist:
-added extra soundeffects to mostly blaster fire, melee hits and some more to complement the movie. And to fill in gaps created by the music removal process.
-Made a new opening to the movie with title cards for the various main characters.
-Took the Lucasfilm logo from Tucker: The Man and His Dream, it's a classic Lucasfilm logo and I liked the look of it.
-moved the young Jyn part to later in the edit.
-added a small flashback of Jyn and Galen hugging.
-Jyn wakes up in prison and I made a introductory name card accompanied by new music.
-Removed the title card for Kafrene by cropping the shot.
-Made a custom introductory name card for Cassian
-made some small cuts in Cassian's dialogue with the spy
-made Cassian's hasitation after killing the spy a bit shorter. I wanted to make Cassian's story arc a bit more interesting.
-did something crazy with Jyn's escape. I can't really explain, you'll see.
-made a custom introductory name card for K-2SO.
-removed the Yavin base title cards by cropping the shots.
-added in a introductory name card for the Rebel Alliance.
-I recut the interrogation scene to make Jyn more reluctant to help. My aim is to make Jyn a but more bad-ass.
-removed Bail Organa from this scene.
-I removed the arguing about Jyns blaster, it felt out of place to me. Why would she not get a blaster, she literally agreed to go on the mission and didn't seem really hostile to anyone. Also, K2SO becomes a bit childish in that interaction.
-I removed some lines from Saw yelling lies and treason, never really liked how he shouted them.
-removed references to Bor Gullet.
-new introductory title card for Bodhi.
-added in a introductory title card for The Empire, when the star destroyer is unveiled and we see the Death Star for the first time.
-I kept all of the Tarkin/Krennic scene, but made a new introductory name card for Krennic.
-I used Burbin's excellent deepfake of Tarkin to replace various shots of him.
-recut the Jedha arrival to match the new music I inserted.
-I recut the Chirrut and Baze fight and inserted custom name cards and new music, also removed Chirrut's "is your foot alright" line. I inserted slowmotions and a zoom in on Chirrut's face.
-Removed some sillyness after the Chirrut fight.
-Slightly recut the interaction between Saw and Jyn, I didn't like Jyn's indifference towards the Empire, also Saw being very weird about the message and Jyn.
-Moved the "Death Star above Jedha City and order to fire" scene to after the "finding the pilot" scene. And glued some firing shots together. I felt there was too much time between the order given to fire and the actual firing.
-Removed K2SO's line about there being no horizon, I thought it was a silly attempt at humor and not well delivered.
-Removed a small parts of Baze aiming his gun at the pilot and then shooting the lock, I never liked that, it was to insinuate he was going to kill the pilot and in the final moment shoot the lock, but it was so obvious and jarring to me.
-did a custom crashzoom on the rescue ship as it comes in view.
-replaced the music track from the Jedha escape.
-removed Bodhi's child like reaction "if I was brave enough".
-removed various small parts of dialogue to speed the arrival on Eadu up. Cut to the action already :).
-removed K2SO's lines about odds as he pilots the ship.
-removed K2SO's second "And the whole system goes down" line.
-removed K2SO saying how they're gonna leave them behind if they don't get back, there's no ship to get back to, they had to find a new ship.
-replace the music track of uncovering Galen as the traitor and added in extra SFX to fill in the gaps and bleed from the original soundtrack.
-moved the shot of Andor realising not wanting to kill Galen to after Galen is hit by Krennic.
-inserted new music under the x-wing attack and new SFX to fill in the gaps and original soundtrack bleed.
-also made some explosions have a bit more punch and made Chirrut's blaster have a bit more punch.
-removed K2SO's line "Well done, you're a rebel now." It felt like Bodhi was a baby that was being pampered.
-recut the Jyn and Cassian fight to fit a new audio track, including slowing down some parts for dramatic effect.
-cut the Krennic and Vader scene, it serves no purpose and I just didn't like it all that much of how Krennic is treated.
-shortened the fighting between the rebel leaders, I though it was too distracting.
-made a few small cuts in Cassians speech to Jyn to get more to the point. And in line with a new audio track.
-inserted a new audio track under Rogue One leaving the base.
-removed Bodhi's comment about the shuttle being a bit cramped, the line served no purpose what so ever and, imo, broke the emotions invoked by Cassian's speech.
-removed K2SO's line "Cassian said I had to", I want K2SO to bond a bit more with Jyn.
-removed Cassian's "welcome home", I think the line feels weird.
-removed some of Bodhi's hesitating when asked about a callsign, I want him to be more decisive.
-removed the scene between Bail and Mon Mothma about Obi-Wan, it served no real purpose.
-cropped the shot of Scariff to remove the title card.
-added custom sfx when the shuttle enters the shield, because of a newly inserted music track.
-removed the part of Jyn's speech where she repeats saying they'll find the plans, that line felt very forced.
-removed K2SO's line about making it only 33% of the way, it's obvious they need a diversion, that's what they were planning all along. Plus, in this scene it seems like K2SO is out of breath or affected by reading another droid's memory, but I thought it makes no sense, him being a droid and all.
-removed Cassian's hesitation and Jyn's confirmation to blow stuff up, it made Cassian look less decisive.
-inserted new audio track under the start of the battle of Scariff.
-added new SFX.
-made some small cuts to remove bleed from the original audio track at the start of the Scariff Battle.
-moved the fighters leaving Javin 4 base to right after Mon Mothma gets the news.
-inserted new audio track when back on Scariff.
-added new SFX.
-added a new song when the rebel fleet exits hyperspace and the battle begins.
-made a few small cuts to the attack in the shield gate because there was too much bleed from the original music track.
-removed Jyn saying "What does that mean?", it's obvious they're trapped as the shield gate is closed. It made her look dumb, which she clearly isn't.
-removed the sentimental scene when Jyn gives K2SO a blaster.
-removed Bodhi's "Get going" (or something), I don't like his character development here, he sounds too pushy.
-rearranged some scenes in the entire battle to make the battle scenes less intercut by Jyn, Cassian, K2SO and Melshi.
-made numerous small changes and cuts in the final battle, there's simply too much to remember, I'm sorry for not being specific.
-removed various lines of text explaining that Jyn and Cassian need to send the plans, it felt overexplained to me in the original edit.
-removed K2SO's "Goodbye", I felt it to be too much.
-I left Red 5's death in, but removed the interior shot, I liked the action sequence, but I think the acting is not great and distracting.
-removed the shot when Bodhi is hiding behind the crate conversing with Cassian. I felt it slowed things down a bit, and we don't need the reminder the pressure is on.
-inserted a new audio track for the deaths of Chirrut, Baze and Bodhi.
-rearranged the scenes so their deaths follow eachother more closely.
-rearranged the space battle and Raddus' scenes so that the action sequences with the hammerhead follow eachother.
-added a new audio track when the hammerhead hits the Stardestroyer.
-removed the spoken lines from the SD deckofficer.
-rearranged the shots from Jyn aligning the dish, falling and held at gunpoint by Krennic as one scene.
-created a flashback chapter for when Jyn was younger.
-removed some unnecessary lines from Krennic to Galen, to up the tension a bit.
-rearranged some shots during the flashback.
-added in new music to the flashback.
-added in a new song when Jyn and Andor escape the facility.
-took a shot from Vader looking over the battlefield to supplement his introduction to the rebel soldiers.
-added in a new song when Vader goes on a rampage.
-removed the shots from inside the Tantive IV and from Leia, now we don't know if it was actually the Tantive IV and Leia.
-added in a new song to the end credits.
-added custom credits for this fanedit
-I did an overall slight colorgrade. upped the saturation a little bit and changed the colors of various scenes a tiny bit.
