Synopsis:
This Short shows Obi-Wan’s interaction with Luke and Uncle Owen. Here, he does not leave Tatooine and abandon Luke in the process. The Leia kidnap story is removed: if the other twin got into trouble, someone else should deal with that. Obi-Wan’s responsibility is to protect this twin, Luke. Qui-Gon Jinn returns, to continue teaching his student, in his first (and so far only) live-action appearance since The Phantom Menace. The 261-minute story is distilled down to 8 minutes (which includes 2-minutes of complete credits). A quick Short to watch between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Intentions:
The OBI-WAN KENOBI mini-series adds useful information between Star Wars Episodes III & IV. It also shows events that seem inconsistent with the Original Trilogy. E.g. Leia mentions that Kenobi fought with her father in the Clone Wars but she does not show any recognition of having met him herself. I felt indifferent to most of the story. Much of it didn't connect to A New Hope of Revenge of the Sith. Too much felt like fan-service, like Vader's appearance and (admittedly impressive looking) battle with Kenobi. Not a long-term fan service that contributes to world-building, but an instant gratification that looks cool in the moment but proves entirely forgettable once the show is finished.
Change List:
What WASN'T cut? This Short retains 8 minutes out of 261 minutes. So, what is retained?
- Opening titles.
- Kenobi watches over Luke (without being noticed).
- Kenobi visits Uncle Owen's farm and gives Luke the toy spaceship.
- Owen forces Kenobi to take that back and insists Kenobi must leave Luke alone.
- Qui-Gon appears to Kenobi to continue his training, telling him "we've got a ways to go".
- Complete closing credits (2 minutes).
