Synopsis:

Payback is the story of Porter, a career criminal who was doubled crossed by his partners on a job. They stole his cut, $70,000, and him for dead. There are two official edits of Payback, each with their pros and cons, and one of the primary differences is the color grading. The goal of The Principle Cut is to incorporate the best of each version into one cohesive movie experience. The color palette has been matched and additional scenes have been edited together to create a new cut, using both versions.

Intentions:

The goal was to color match The Theatrical Cut, and The Director's Cut, creating a brand new version of the film with the best of both.

Change List:

- The Principle Cut of 'Payback' uses the Theatrical Cut as the template, retaining the same basic story structure and score. Director's Cut scenes are added in to compliment the TC, color-correcting both in a brand new palette, unique to the Principle Cut. - Opening credits have been repainted to match across shots from both versions, and to retain their redness after all the color-grading. - Homeless man dialogue is used from the Director's Cut, despite having Theatrical Cut score. - The scene where Porter and Lynne discuss Val and then fight has been inserted from DC. - A high contrast black and white filter has been added to the flashback / heist sequence. - Porter and Rosie's reunion scene keeps the extended dialogue / conflict from DC. - When Porter interrogates Val, there is a close up shot used in DC that is not used in TC. I've incorporated the shot into the Principle Cut. - The DC scene of Carter's bodyguard frisking Val before their appointment has been added in. - The DC scene of Carter's bodyguard frisking Porter has been added in. The bodyguard finding the roll of coins has been kept out, and I have removed the roll of coins exchange entirely from Porter's conversation with Carter, as I feel it contributed little, and broke immersion, having a bodyguard overlook this. - When Porter shoots Carter, both versions have different reaction shots from Carter. Despite being made up of the Theatrical Cut, I have used the Director's Cut shots of Carter's reaction, as the TC shots are silly and melodramatic. - When Stegman is killed by the Chinese mafia, the close up shots of his body taking the gunfire differ in each version of the film. I've used the shots from the Director's Cut, as they are gorier and more realistic.

Additional Notes:

All editing was done on Adobe Premiere pro.

Other Sources:

A few sound effects (Artlist), but aside from that, everything used was from either of the official edits, or the official score by Chris Broadman.
