Synopsis:
My goals were:
- Brighten the entire first movie to match the vibrance of the second movie so the movies feel more cohesive.
- Reduce the parent subplot as much as possible. They are still a motivating factor for Peter, but there is no more plot of trying to uncover their mystery.
- Trim a lot of the smoldering and awkward pauses throughout, especially in the first movie.
- Make Peter less of a popular skater kid. They tried too hard to make him cool.
- Change some of the music choices so that felt out of place.
- Cut some of the over the top campiness in both films.
Both films now run at just about 2 hours each so they don't overstay their welcome.
Intentions:
I've always liked Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man but I thought his two movies were just mediocre. I've looked around and have never found an edit of the two movies that I fully enjoyed. I made these so that whenever I go through the MCU I could have something that fit in a bit more with the Marvel style before I get to No Way Home.
Change List:
- Cut the entire Roosevelt subplot. Peter still thinks about his parents throughout the movie but he does not do any investigation. There are several scenes cut throughout where Peter is in his room putting things together, a scene where Aunt May finds out, and then Peter's journey into the subway station. Everything has been cut so the focus is now on Peter's relationship with Gwen and not him finding out what happened to his parents
- The movie does not start off with Peter and Gwen back together. Peter is conflicted but did not instantly back down on his promise to Capt Stacy and start dating her right away. Now the whole movie is building up to them getting back together. Lots of trims to the opening graduation and I cut the scene at the restaurant with Gwen's family
- Cut every shot where Max thinks he is friends with Spiderman. He is no longer a Spiderman stalker but instead just a lonely, pushed around guy who craves basic human attention
- Cut all mentions of Max's birthday
- Rescored the montage of Spiderman saving people while news reports talk about him with "A-Punk" by Vampire Weekend
- Cut scene of Aunt May trying to come into Peter's room while he is still in his Spider suit
- Trimmed a bit of Peter and Aunt May arguing about laundry
- Cut Max's daydream of yelling at his boss
- Trimmed the elevator scene with Gwen and Max so they don't talk about his birthday or being friends with Spiderman
- Trimmed the scenes with Max fixing the cables over the eel tank so there is no mention of his birthday
- Cut the small shot of Max's gap in his teeth pushing together
- Trimmed some of Peter and Harry's first meeting to cut some of the forced laughter and Harry trying to initially get away by saying he's in a meeting
- Cut the shots of Peter walking through traffic to meet with Gwen
- Rescored his entire talk with Gwen with "Electric Love" by Borns
- Trimmed Electro talking to Spiderman about them being friends again
- Added the deleted scene of Peter and Gwen both looking at their phones and thinking about each other, but not calling. Color corrected
- Added the deleted scene where Harry tells Peter in person that he is dying and he shows him the battle suit. Color corrected. I had to trim around the few shots where the background cgi sky was not finished. There is one tiny shot with it still there, but it just looks like there is a glare on the window and it isn't really noticeable
- Cut Peter kissing Gwen while hiding in the maintenance closet
- Color corrected all shots of Kafka so he isn't so bright. I was always distracted by his super pink lips
- Cut Electro saying his name. The scene with Kafka and Electro talking now ends with Electro saying he wants a world without Spiderman
- Moved the scene of Peter trying to talk to Gwen right before her interview to a little later so that there is some space in between scenes to cover up time jumps that were created when removing the Roosevelt subplot
- Cut Peter telling Gwen about his parents and his desire to save Harry. It's all focused on her now
- Slight trims to Harry rescuing Max. This scene ends when Harry gets him out. There is no more extended shot of Max putting Kafka in the restraints
- Added the deleted scene of Gwen going to Peter's house and telling Aunt May that she's leaving. Color corrected
- Added the deleted scene of Aunt May telling Peter to go after Gwen. Color corrected and darkened to match the time of day
- Cut Peter making extra jokes after telling Gwen he loves her and will follow her wherever she goes
- Cut all shots of the planes in the sky having trouble while Electro is taking out the power grid. It's an unnecessary distraction
- While Gwen is falling in the clocktower I cut Spiderman's web "hand" reaching out to her. It is a really goofy shot that detracts from the scene
- (ALT VERSION ONLY) Added the deleted scene of Peter meeting his father. Color corrected. This scene is really well acted, but it doesn't fit in the narrative of this edit. I added it as an alternate version if anyone wanted it.
- Cut Harry in prison and them setting up a future movie that never happened
- While Peter is listening to Gwen's speech I changed one of his memories of kissing Gwen to a different one because the original was them kissing at the graduation which I removed
- The movie ends the same as the original
