Synopsis:
My goals were:
- Brighten the entire first movie to match the vibrance of the second movie so the movies feel more cohesive.
- Reduce the parent subplot as much as possible. They are still a motivating factor for Peter, but there is no more plot of trying to uncover their mystery.
- Trim a lot of the smoldering and awkward pauses throughout, especially in the first movie.
- Make Peter less of a popular skater kid. They tried too hard to make him cool.
- Change some of the music choices so that felt out of place.
- Cut some of the over the top campiness in both films.
Both films now run at just about 2 hours each so they don't overstay their welcome.
Intentions:
I've always liked Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man but I thought his two movies were just mediocre. I've looked around and have never found an edit of the two movies that I fully enjoyed. I made these so that whenever I go through the MCU I could have something that fit in a bit more with the Marvel style before I get to No Way Home.
Change List:
- Brightened the entire movie and matched the vibrance to the second movie
- Rescored the first scene at highschool with "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones
- Trimmed some over the top bullying by Flash
- Cut Peter skating in school and the couple kissing at his locker
- Trimmed after Flash beat up Peter so no one randomly kicks his camera
- Cut Peter complaining about meatballs so he isn't such a jerk to his aunt
- Cut the elaborate lock in Peter's room. He goes to all the trouble to lock it just to unlock it right away. Unnecessary scene
- Cut Peter getting home after getting his powers and taking a bunch of food up to his room in front of his and aunt and uncle
- Slight trims to the basketball scene so Flash isn't so over the top. This scene is still super campy though
- Heavily trimmed Peter asking Gwen out so there isn't so much awkward silence and no Peter smoldering. Added the song "Oh Oh Oh" by Say Hi to Your Mom
- Cut the entire skating montage
- Slightly trimmed Peter getting home late so he doesn't skate into the scene
- Cut the nerdy kids talking about swing speed
- Trimmed the car jacker scene so Peter doesn't overly harass him. He still jokes and bullies him, but it doesn't go as far now. I ended the scene after he figures out it's not his uncle's killer and cut the entire police escape sequence
- Cut the entire scene of Peter showing up at Gwen's room before dinner
- Trimmed some of the dinner sequence so it doesn't drag on so long
- Trimmed Peter trying to tell Gwen that he's Spiderman. Much less awkward silence and weird looks
- Slight trim to Peter saving the kid from the burning car. There is a tiny shot of the kid starting to fall that looks bad
- Cut Peter throwing a football and bending the goalpost, as well as them kissing. The shot ends with Peter saying it's his job to stop the Lizard
- Slight trim to Peter telling Capt Stacy that Connors is the Lizard
- Cut the shot of a reward for pictures of the Lizard. Peter is going to fight him because he believes he needs to, not for a reward. It never gets brought up again either
- Cut Capt Stacy asking Gwen if she wants hot chocolate. Peter now shows up at Gwen's and then it goes straight to her cleaning his wounds
- Cut Gwen calling Peter "Bug boy" which sounds a lot like "F***boy"
- Trimmed this scene so it ends with Peter saying it's his responsibility to fix it
- Small trims to the school fight. The Lizard does not make a bomb from random chemicals anymore. Tightened up a couple more shots for pacing
- When Gwen is making the antidote Peter no longer tells her that he's ordering her to leave. He also doesn't say "Mother ----" when she ignores him
- Cut the entire small plotline of Peter getting shot in the leg by a police officer
- Cut the entire crane sequence. It was way too goofy for me and completely unnecessary
- Small trim to a Lizard shot where he is sniffing the air because of bad CGI
- Cut Peter screaming when Capt Stacy dies. I think the quiet acceptance of what just happened is more powerful than a scream
- Cut Flash showing Peter his Spiderman shirt
- Cut the classroom scene with the teacher telling Peter not to make promises he can't keep, and then Peter telling Gwen those are the best kind. Peter and Gwen stay broken up into the second film now
- The movie now ends with Uncle Ben's voice message and that transitions into the final Spiderman montage
