Synopsis:
YES MAN has three layers:
- A life-lesson on opening yourself up to opportunities. Say "yes" to them instead of "no" all the time. A simple but solid concept.
- That's packaged inside a romantic comedy. Endearing; predictable but enjoyable.
- Which is filled with the (physical) comedy that Jim Carrey is famous for. This hijacks an otherwise decent movie.
Intentions:
This fanedit focuses on the first two layers and reduces the third. Enjoy the movie as a reminder to say "yes" a little more often and open yourself up to new experiences, regardless of whether you're a fan of Jim Carrey's facial and physical comedy.
Change List:
50+ cuts. Mostly small trims.
Cuts that remove more than 30 seconds:
- Cut Carl's nightmare that his friends are indifferent to find him dead on the couch.
- Heavily trim Carl's drunk fight in the alley outside the bar.
- Cut the would-be ledge jumper.
- Cut the "false teeth" bedroom scene.
- Cut Carl trying to call Allison during the bridal-shower party (the scene of Allison's art exhibition is retained in a different place).
- Cut the nurse checking Carl's pulse in the hospital, and Rooney ogling her.
- Heavily trim Carl on the Dukati. Still funny, but more tightly edited.
- Cut the naked "Yes" seminar.
- Sped up the end credits. Kept the scroll smooth by using Flowframes to interpolate 6x the frames, then sped up and re-rendered at 23.976fps.
Added: deleted scene of Munchhausen by Proxy singing "Yes Man". Audio starts over other scenes, after a while the video cuts to the performance.
Added: (part of) the fake documentary of Munchhausen by Proxy's discovery and subsequent recording contract. Placed during the end credits, consistent with the placement of the credits scene.
Additional Notes:
Solution: Remove much of the comedy (including most silly faces). Trim caricatures (the ledge jumper, most of Danny Masterson's character, part of the bank's vice-president). Reduce juvenile humor (cut the false teeth). Reduce product placement. Add blu-ray bonus material of Zooey Deschanel's character opening herself up to new opportunities. After all, this lesson isn't just for one person, it's for both people in a relationship.
The result is a romantic comedy with a serious heart, not adolescent humor, at its core.
